If you only want to drive an hour, then you will want to go to Coco Beach. Take the 528 Beach line. There are tolls, so make sure you have change or small bills.
If you don’t mind driving a bit further (mabe 1 hour 45mins) go to Fort Desoto Park over by Tampa. It has BEAUTIFUL beaches, nice waves and clear blue water. Almost any beach on the Gulf side is worth the trip.
But, going to the East coast has its advantages too. While over there, stop by Titusville and the Kennedy Space Center. I am not “into” rockets, but this place is amazing. Its got great activities and tours for all ages.
Cocoa Beach. It is under an hours drive from Orlando and the closest beach. Go to the pier and there will be plenty of activities for the kids. They have a lot of rental places where you can rent things for them to play with at the beach.
Do not go to Cocoa Beach!!! You will be disappointed…it’s old and dirty. Go west…Greater Tampa area is beautiful…same distance as going east. I’m going to Disney next month, staying outside Orlando and driving west for the beaches. Have fun.
That would be Cocoa Beach which is no more than an hour away from Orlando and easy to get to by using the Beachline Expressway takes you directly to Cocoa Beach. I would also recommend staying overnight at a nice ocean-front hotel so you get a full day to enjoy the beach along with the beautifull sunset without having to worry about driving back. Here are the top three ocean-front hotels I recommend in Cocoa Beach:
Hilton Cocoa Beach Ocean Fronthttp://www.hiltoncocoabeach.com
Doubletree Ocean Front Hotelhttp://www.cocoabeachdoubletree.com
Four Points by Sheraton Cocoa Beachhttp://www.starwoodhotels.com/fourpoints…

Have Fun!
Gulf Coast Beaches are by far better. And Ft De Soto is a great family beach. It is a state park, and has everything. Camping, A Historic fort (the kids can learn something on vacation!), Beaches, Grills, Trails, beautiful sunsets,…great place!
